Pocket cultures

Amazonians
A news item today caught my eye. Amazonians largely untouched by the missionary zeal of Western culture. What are the ethical issues raised by the decision to engage/not-engage in cultural exchange? Such an exchange would seem to threaten Amazonians with Western culture's proclivity to devour all it meets.

A Study
A stray example comes from a study on the effects of introducing TV - a potent conduit of culture - into cultures with high fertility rates. The skinny: TV in, birth rate down. The study exposes how media/entertainment, bearing its weighted info-ideologies, can profoundly shape a moral culture. A friendly warning for those of us whose permit TV to pump unfiltered culture into our family rooms.

e.g.
Wildly popular Skins. Need I say more?

Films
This story also makes me think of the many films about cultural exchanges that also involve religious cultures. Three examples: The Mission, Apocalypto, Arranged. Three very different approaches, but the question of cultural engagement, preserving identity and faith run through all three.

Inculturation or interculturality? Hmm, B16, what think you?

WeatherBlog
Also, there is this great storm! Great in its size and power. I am a weather buff/nut, and so I must recommend to Iowans this site for forecasts and this site for radar.
